Email editor is quite laggy, displays text in italics

The email editor is quite laggy. Clicks and keys sometimes take several seconds to show results (including clicking on editor items like style and italics, the backspace key). In addition, the text in the editor was showing in italics. I tried selecting it and toggling italics on and off but it did not have any effect.
